Czech Republic: Parliamentary elections preview
General elections in the Czech Republic, to be held on Friday May 28 and Saturday May 29, are expected to restore political stability after four years of a deadlocked parliament and feeble coalitions. Neither of the two dominant parties in the Czech Republic – the social (CSSD) and civic democrats (ODS) – will gain enough seats in parliament to form a government on their own. The most likely scenario is a centre-left or centre-right coalition led by either by the CSSD or ODS, respectively, with two or three small centrist parties as junior coalition partners responsible for non-economic portfolios. Alternatively, the CSSD, the leader in all of the opinion polls, can opt for a minority government with the support of deputies from the unreformed communist party (KSCM).
